The Power of the Imagination

Crafting my vision

I bring my photo’s and idea’s to life through many methods. I’ve spent a lot of time adapting to challenging locations, such just finding space in a small apartment to bring an idea to life. Through my years of experience I’ve developed skills shooting in studio, on location and with a wide range of materials and props needed to create a scene. I make a lot, with a little and I pull from arts and crafts as a child to build out my ideas.

For a more complex piece outside of my personal skillset, like this functional floating boat, I turn to my network of creators for collaboration. In this situation I conceptualized a traditional Japanese fishing boat through historical images, photographs of the chosen shooting location and measurements of the intended passenger.

More commonly I employ a technique known as a “Digirama”. Similar to the technology ILM has developed, called “The Volume,” the subject is shot in front of a screen. The adjustable screen background, coupled with RGB lighting and props, allows for far more natural lighting and blending compared to a green screen in my experience.

This same technique can be transformed into a green screen in a pinch.

Scouting unique locations that give my photography an edge is very important to me. The shot below, was taken in a miniature museum that allowed me to photograph my toys within their exhibits. Being able to work with an incredibly delicate environment was required here. The results definitely speak for themselves.

I also shoot at commonly accessible locations, like local beaches. In doing so, I still take my time in finding very particular micro-environments that would best suit my desired outcome for the scene. This seemingly rocky background is actually a series of windswept sand dunes that would crumble from a gentle touch.

In contrast, I also work with printed backdrops

Advanced editing to bring any idea to life is no issue. I’m experienced with Lightroom, Photoshop and Capture One.
